The Great Giana Sisters is a 1987 platform game developed by Time Warp Productions and published by Rainbow Arts, and Elite Systems.

How to Play

The Great Giana Sisters is a 2D side-scrolling platform arcade game. The player controls either Giana or her lookalike sister Maria.

Each level contains dream crystals, which gives you points when collected. By collecting 100 dream crystals you will also get an extra life. Additionally, extra lives can also be found in the form of hidden "Lollipop" items.

Most enemies are killed by jumping on top of them or shooting them (with the right power-ups). Enemies in the game include rolling eyeballs, owls, deadly insects and flesh-eating fish.

Power Ups

The "fire wheel" is a power-up that transforms Giana into a punk. This gives her the ability to crush rocks with her head/hair. The "lightning bolt" gives Giana "dream bubbles", which is a single projectile shot. "Strawberries" give the ability to fire homing projectiles. "Double lightning" gives the ability to fire recoiling projectiles.

There is one defensive item in the game, which is the "water drop", this protects against fire. A certain number of special items can also affect the entire screen, one exampled being the "clock". This will freeze all the on-screen enemies, and there are "magic bombs", which simply kill all enemies on-screen. The items mentioned can be found in the item blocks positioned in various places around the stages.

Stages

The Great Giana Sisters has two types of stage. The "overworld" and the "underground" (somewhat like many Mario games). The "overworld" stages have greenish scenery and pipe-shaped objects, and bottomless pits for Giana to avoid being killed by. The "underground" has additional hazards, including water and fire, as well as the games bosses.

The game has 33 stages in total. There are also hidden "warp blocks" that can be found so you can jump through stages of the game.
