About Sonic the Hedgehog

Sonic the Hedgehog is an arcade platform game published by Sega for the Sega Genesis, released in North America in 1991 and then in PAL regions and Japan soon after. The game is also the first in the Sonic game series.

How to Play

Sonic the Hedgehog runs at supersonic speeds, and sets on a quest to defeat Dr. Robotnik. This evil scientist has captured and imprisoned animals inside robots and has stolen the powerful Chaos Emeralds.

During the game, Sonic must collect gold rings for health, jump on top of the bad guys to kill them and get points, and use the ramps to speed up Sonic and make him jump faster and higher.

Sonic the Hedgehog Gameplay

Collect 100 rings to get an extra life.

Rings act as protection. If Sonic has at least one ring and hits an enemy or dangerous obstacle, all his rings will scatter. However, he can collect some of those rings back before they disappear. If Sonic is hit without any rings, a life is lost.

Shields and short term invincibility can be collected which provide extra protection. Hazards such as drowning, falling into pits, running out of time or getting crushed, kills Sonic regardless.

Zones and Acts

Sonic the Hedgehog is split into six main zones, and one shorter 'Final Zone'. Each of the main zones has its own visual look, and while there are some enemies that appear throughout the game, each zone has it's own unique enemies and obstacles.

Each main zone is split into three acts. At the finish of each third act, Sonic must confront Dr. Robotnik. After completing the zone six, Sonic continues directly to the 'Final Zone' for one last battle with Dr.Robotnik, where Robotnik's machine must be destroyed, which then ends the game.

Special Stages

If Sonic manages to reach the end of any zone's Act 1 or Act 2 holding a minimum of 50 rings, a much bigger ring appears on-screen, which he can jump and enter a 'special stage'.

In these 'special stages', Sonic earns a number of continues for each lot of 50 rings he manages to collect. The main goal though is to obtain the Chaos Emerald which is hidden somewhere in the maze. Making contact with any of the blocks marked "GOAL" will end the level immediately.
