About Sunset Riders
Sunset Riders is a side-scrolling run and gun shooting arcade game by Konami released in 1991. The game is set in the American Wild West. You take control of a bounty hunter who is seeking various rewards offered for various criminals.
The coin operated arcade version was released either as a two-player or four-player version. Sunset Riders was also released for the Sega Mega Drive (Genesis) in 1992 and for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) in 1993, and received positive reviews.
Sunset Riders, which is set in a colorful version of the old American Wild West, centers around four bounty hunters. They go by the names of Steve, Billy, Bob, and Cormano, who are out to claim bounties on offer for taking out the most wanted outlaws. Steve and Billy have revolvers, Bob a rifle, and Cormano has a shotgun.
How to Play
The objective of Sunset Riders is to eliminate a gang of outlaws in eight different stages, with a boss character at the end of each. Five of the stages are played on foot, two are on horseback, and one is on a moving train. A bonus mini-game is played after the second and fifth stages, in which the players can get extra points. If a player completes all eight stages, then the game starts over from the first level but with increased difficulty.
Power-ups and bonus items can be got by entering doorways, killing some sack carrying bandits, or opening sacks. There are two power-ups available. A gold sheriff's badge that gives the player fully automatic fire and a silver one that gives the player a second gun. Other extras/weapons include dynamite, hanging rocks/barrels/torches, and lastly, Gatling guns on the final stage.
One life is lost whenever a player is hit, trampled by bulls, caught in an explosion or fire, or struck by a rock or similar. Additionally, any power-ups that a player may of gained are also lost.
